Pirelli Smart Tires Unveiled at Geneva Motor Show
Two in one, Pirelli Smart Tires
The 87th Geneva Motor Show is an annual auto show held in March in Geneva, Switzerland. This year, Pirelli premiered two types innovations within one tire.
The first innovation is the P Zero and Winter Sottozero tires, color edition. These are new types of tires made from newly designed and engineered material. These tires are only available for pre-order for the prestige segment of cars, meaning supercars and hypercars, but they will be available to premium cars as well. As shown in the picture below red, yellow, silver, and white are the colors available. The new material designed covers the colors on the tire, this is to keep the colors vibrant. It also avoids it from fading due to heavy and constant usage.
Although the entire tire isn't colored, it's a design that was only previously on Formula One tires. Now it is available to those with Lambrouginis, Porches, McLaren, etc.
The Pirelli smart tires mentioned? The same color P Zero and Winter Sottozero tires mentioned above. Not only can you have personalized tires but also tires that talk back to you. Technically, the tires talk back to an app on your smartphone.
Chip Meets App
'Pirelli Connesso' is the concept unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show. Each tire has a small chip embedded in its sidewall that weighs just a few grams. It doesn't disrupt the balance of the tire so you don't have to worry about the tire becoming uneven with usage. The chip connects to the Pirelli cloud and to a smartphone app. The Connesso system recognizes each tire's identification code. It can track it from when it's manufactured to when it's recycled at the end of its life, pretty neat. You can follow the tire through its life cycle!
The Pirelli Connesso system, for now, measures tire pressure, tire temperature, vertical load, tire wear, and the number of kilometers driven per tire. In the future, Pirelli says it will also estimate remaining tire life and act as a remote tire pressure gauge when the tires are inflating. So when the tires tell you that you have low tire pressure, you can be filled up again using Stop & Go's Tire Mobility Kit.
Set to launch in the U.S. in the summer and then Europe.
